IS THE CORPUS CHRISTI “TEA PARTY” and regional “PATRIOT” MOVEMENTS SERVING AS A “PRESSURE COOKER” FOR “WILD-EYE” DIVIANTS? As the national violence and threats related to the PRO-TEA PARTY and the PRO-GUN and PRO-SEPARATISTS, PRO-SOVERN, PRO-JOHN BIRCHERS (with both their anti-Government and anti-HISPANIC IMMIGRATION rhetoric peppered with racially charged stealthy links to deviant sub-movements -- SKINHEADS etc. -- who find shelter and positive reinforcement in their rallies) grow and mature, many of their wild-eye “following” and “true believers” “deadly weapon” RAP SHEETS reflect it. But how can a movement that has been spin-doctored and marketed as “PATRIOTIC” and “loyal to the fundamental principles of the constitution” espousing human-dignity and respect for others serve as a “pressure-cooker” for some “true believers”?  Do some of these “True Believers” really zoom their sniper rifle scopes and/or “deadly weapons” on ordinary citizens and law enforcement officers – that is, do they “scope out” obsessively to define targets in the regular citizenry to add hue to their radically charged belief systems? “IT IS SADLY TRUE!” – this is the answer of many a former “TEA-PARTYER” that has become disenchanted  the nested “wild-eye” recruits.   From COLUMBINE-like massacres to aims at the president of the nation to the targeted congressmen to ordinary law enforcement officers carrying out their daily duties to regular moms with children in CORPUS CHRISTI and the surrounding area who find themselves on the wrong-side of their transitory whims.  One such activist and “true believer” in the anti-Government propaganda from the Corpus Christi area – Johnny Heath.  He was recently accused of assaulting a mom and her son with a deadly weapon in District Judge Missy Medary’s court – the judge is a stanch Republican.  Did the judge have a bias for hearing the case and whom the “TEA-PARTY” could having bestowed on her a political victory this pasts election. Mrs. Janet Montagne has provided care for decades to people in need throughout Texas and created hundreds of jobs.  Her company Rivercity Hospice came to South Texas over a year ago to provide the care that many in our community desperately need- particularly with chronic, debilitating and terminal illnesses. Often, because of a lack of resources, the seriously ill  must receive treatment away from their home, family, and in an unfamiliar environment.  They often unfortunately die in a nursing home or hospital unnecessarily and alone.

We interviewed Mrs. Janet Montagne, the CEO of Rivercity Hospice services covering half the counties in Texas, to learn more about hospice and to educate our readers:

What is Hospice?

Mrs. Janet Montagne:  “Hospice is a compassionate, patient-centered approach to medical care and support for people at the end of life and their families. It is care focused on maintaining dignity, increasing quality of life, and providing comfort, including pain and symptom control. Hospice recognizes that every person's experience will be different and the hospice team creates a plan of care according to the individual needs and wishes of each patient. Hospice staff members are available at all times, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is the mission of hospice staff to walk side-by-side with patients and offer support, not only for any physical symptoms, but for emotional and spiritual needs, as well. This support extends to family members, and hospice helps them cope with their own unique emotional and spiritual concerns.  Many people think that hospice means that you have given up or stopped fighting-this is not correct. Many people need the help, and the compassion and the services, when dealing with a severe illness that could potentially be terminal as assessed by  your physician and enhances the quality of your life in order to have control and dignity.  People with Alzheimers Disease, stroke, lung, kidney and heart problems all can benefit. ”

What Services are provided by Rivercity Hospice?

Ms. Janet Montagne:

“Rivercity Hospice treats the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of the patient and their family. Our family of healthcare providers, clergy and social workers provide and coordinate palliative services in the patient's home, wherever home may be. We extend our services into Assisted Living Facilities, Nursing Facilities and Residential Care homes as well as the patient's private home.  Our team at Rivercity Hospice will coordinate the care and treatment of the patient by providing nursing services, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and medical equipment necessary to meet the needs of the patient's terminal illness as ordered by the physician.  We are focused on managing the illness to ensure the patient is comfortable. This is accomplished by working closely with the family members and caregivers to ensure they have the resources and essential knowledge to meet the patient’s needs. This sounds expensive.  How do the poor, elderly, and even children and their families afford these extensive services?

“Hospice care is a covered benefit under Medicare, most private insurance plans, HMOs and managed care organizations. Hospice is also available through Medicaid.  While each hospice has its own policies concerning payment for care, it is a founding principle of Rivercity Hospice to offer services based upon the patient's need.  For those with economic hardship and having difficulty obtaining services, Rivercity Hospice Foundation was created to address the needs of patients who have no resources available to them. The contributions received are earmarked for the communities from which they came. Each fundraiser ensures that we come closer to meeting the needs of another patient.  We are dedicated to the 106 counties in Texas that we service and want to do everything we can to deliver compassionate and dignified care.  We believe that all patients who are eligible for hospice, should receive hospice. After all, this is the time when quality of life matters most.”

We believe that each patient's life experience is unique - many of the problems, coping strategies and emotions are not. Utilizing continuity of care allows for an earlier hospital discharge and provides the patient an opportunity to live the rest of their life the way they choose .... at home with family and friends.

We believe in the basic right of all patients to competent nursing care. Much can be accomplished medically, physically, psychologically and socially to enable patients to lead a more comfortable and functional life. A hospice care plan is designed for each patient utilizing insight from the family, our nurses, hospice team and in conference with the physician.

What Makes Hospice Different?

Mrs. Janet Montagne:

“Hospice focuses on pain and symptom control that enable the patient to live as fully and comfortably as possible.  Hospice treats the person, not the disease.  The hospice interdisciplinary team cares for the medical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of the patient and family. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death: it affirms life and understands that dying is a natural part of the cycle of life.  Hospice care is provided at home, including nursing homes and assisted living residences - wherever home is.  For hospice patients and their families, help is just a phone call away, 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week.  Even after the death of the patient, hospice continues to care for the family by providing grief counseling.”

Are you reaching the Hispanic as well as as African American, White and Asian populations with hospice services here in South Texas?

Mrs. Montagne:  Absolutely.  One of the ways we are educating the public is through television, radio and social media in both English and Spanish. We’ve partnered with  Lopez Broadcasting to reach the Mexican American community as well as other cultures. We respect the Hispanic community and understand how important family and having that support is for all cultures.  We understand that people want and need care at home so their families can be close by. The emerging babyboomer population also will demand and expect care tailored to their needs.  This upcoming senior population will want the same care in their home as they can receive at a hospital. Times are changing and healthcare and Rivercity are responding to those expectations.  We are reaching out to the community door to door, and even provide our care to people in nursing homes. We also teach people that you can have home health and hospice at the same time. We encourage any groups whether they be seniors, church groups, hospitals or nursing homes and day care to give us a call and we will be glad to put on a learning seminar any time.  I am excited about employing bilingual healthcare providers and working with the community. We love the people of South Texas and after a year or more of hard work in this area have proven our commitment to being a business that can make a difference in the Coastal Bend area.

ARE BUZZING Bea Molina and Judge “TAKE IT EASY” Santana SLAMMING BACK THE FOOD AND DESERTS on Taxpayer’s TIME AND MONEY?

El Defenzor heard through a myriad of sources that taxpayers are enraged at reported Banker’s hours IN Judge Henry Santana’s court. One taxpayer who needed to come pay a fine was enraged. “I came to the window and knocked and knocked, It was 11:30. I had to ask my boss to give me off an extra 30 minutes to travel to pay a ticket and then hurry back. I didn’t even get lunch? Where is the Judge? Where is the staff? Everything was locked up!! It’s not right!” Still others say the court is a ghost town on Friday by 3pm. “The “Bailout” of the court on Fridays is a common theme for some judges but not to this extreme” says one hawkeyed observer who watches every action at the courthouse daily.

Others have whispered that luxurious 11:30 to 2pm lunches are taken often by the Dynamic Duo of Bea Molina and Judge Santana. While dining on the city’s finest cuisine and presumably lifting their pinkie as they have after lunch gourmet coffee the whole world is on fire in Nueces County!  As they listen to Beethoven and have some Crème Broulet the rest of us are pounding on the courthouse doors for justice!!!

It is whispered that the courthouse is a buzz not only with the embarrassments lately with the Bea Molina Bond/Tagger Son Crisis but now this? When will that court be straightened out?   Already, candidates are drawing a line in the sand and thirsting for Judge Santana’s bench.  Will Santana have the “stomach” to run again (hee hee)? Will Buzzing Bea Molina remain, like a J. Edgar Hooveresque figure, surviving several judges terms or will she be kicked out.  If so it appears that  it will be ADIOS to luxury lunches and mouthwatering deserts of the finest offered in Corpus Christi.  El Defenzor would follow them to their dining rendezvous but would presumably be excluded without coat and tie attire at the city’s finest exclusive powerbroker clubs…

Background: 2012:  Bea Molina reduces a bond set by Nanette Hassette, a powerful and dynamic district judge. The media goes into a frenzy last year. Bea’s boss, Judge Santana looks like  a dear in the headlights for having allowed Bea to handle bonds. Judge Hassette was reportedly fuming for having her power and discretion to protect the public undermined by a mother dropping a bond on a son. How is this not illegal on multiple levels? El Defenzor seeks justice and answers, NOW.

Back in 2012 Judge Hassette was reportedly livid that Bea had lowered the bond of HER TAGGER son. JUDGE HASSETTE known for her strict justice on tagging offenders and for her prosecutors unbending strictness on gang affiliations, Prosecutor “Leo the Enforcer” ,and Judge Hassette have sent shivers down taggers’ spines when they are facing hard time after years of facing lesser punishment such as probation time and time again. The word is out. The buck stops in Judge Hassette’s Court!!!! Hard time for taggers! Bea Molina tried to reportedly get around that!.

In the never ending courthouse drama of Bea Molina (la politiquera that sways openly her influence in the courthouse) and some affiliated family members in the politiquera business, and now her son is in trouble again as an alleged leader tagger in the Corpus Christi area who had been allegedly causing tens of thousands of dollars of damage. District Judge Nanette Hassette as our dear readers may recall, had to set a bond that Buzzing Bea Molina had herself lowered on behalf of Judge Santana, who caught extreme fire last year. Now the coddled son of Bea Molina has violated his probation yet again and will be facing Judge Hassette. Roving reporter Andy Liscano of Action 10 News first got the drop on Bea’s actions.  After facing an almost inpenetrable stonewalling, Liscano finally broke the story!

Judge Hassette has not been tolerant of taggers who have been given a second chance to walk out of her courtroom for a second and third time with a slap on the wrist. According to Courthouse records, the Judge known for her aesthetic beauty as well as her intelligence has given hard time to taggers lately.  Tough minded prosecutors Like “Leo the Enforcer” see this as a gang related act.  Members of Tagging crews such as OR and others are being sent to do hard time for destroying public and private property. Other lawyers representing these crews refused comment based on potential pending appeals of stiff sentences.

One community activist stated on radio, “We are sick of the taggers. It is not art they are creating but destruction.  Every time you desecrate a grave or a schoolyard you are telling Corpus Christi that we are all nothing.  It cheapens the community for our children.  Bea Molina tried to lower her son’s bond on and violated ethics and morality and Judge Santana allowed it. Now after being given a slap on the wrist for lowering bonds and violating judicial canons on behalf of Santana, she is reportedly trying to pull strings and force Judge Hassette to decide things in order to coddle her son again by stating he is a little boy and has ADHD.  A prison sentence should straighten out his attention deficit to know between right and wrong and straighten out his hyperactivity about tagging.”

Bea Molina has been a very controversial figure since she ran against and was defeated by Judge Joe Benavides.  Her mudslinging tactics were put to an end when the toxic dumping charges were uncovered and her Buzzing Bea campaign was blown out of the water (click link for information:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNhQgAJqlyA) .  She was so embittered it was confirmed that she campaigned for the Republican candidate after being thrashed and receiving a shellacking in the primary of 2010, thus fragmenting the Democratic party for major defeats in the Great Defeat of 2010 by powerbroker Republicans like Al Jones and Dick Bowers and Steve Ray.   Judge Benavides refused comment today as the Defenzor tried to get his assessment of the situation. Benavides has been in the papers lately and popular for issuing a million dollar bond on a drunk driver who injured a person critically.  It is whispered behind closed doors that tough justice Judge Jose Longoria slapped Benavides on the back for his tough and swift decision on bond.

All that aside, many will recall a bloody battle of  2010 when it was discovered she had a theft and toxic dumping record that she tried to cover up.  Tony Canales, a national trial lawyer expert even commented back then that he was simply amazed she could work for a judge with a theft and toxic dumping record. Now tampering with government documents to lower a bond and also trying to sway a judge to not send Povrecito Mijito to the Big House?  Come on!!!!

The Corpus Christi times article was bad enough on this issue, but the comments ate Buzzing Bea Molina alive at manipulating the system, tampering with documents, lying about her criminal past and being the master of puppets with Judge Henry Santana.  One Grassroots consultant said of her, “She leaves trouble everywhere she goes. She manipulates Judge Santana like a ventriloquist does a dummy and wants her family to receive special treatment and her daughter a job in the courthouse and her son to get a slap on the wrist for desecrating buildings, schools and graves. Both should go to prison.”

NUECES COUNTY & REGION -- Many are referring to SUSIE LUNA-SALDANA's political advocacy  on radio for JERRY TREVINO (a failed candidate for US Congress)during the Democratic Party Run-Off as "THE SUSIE LUNA-SALDANA EFFECT."  Ms. LUNA-SALDANA, 60s, a politiquera (for "Yellow Dog Democrat") who rose to prominence helping REPUBLICAN win for office in the 2010 election with a hefty political war chest of resources failed to gain an inch in voter approval for her candidate.  On the contrary, candidate Trevino who had procured a boatload of supporters during the Democratic Primaries and was expected by many a political anyalyist to overshadow his opponent -- Rose Mesa-Harrison-- seems to have plummeted as a result of affiliated with the so-called "bipartisan" Politiquera System of  Susie Luna-Salanda.
   Ms. Luna-Saldana, once involved with the TEACHER UNION (and who now uses her affiliation with it) bought airtime on MAGIC-Q 93.5 and 104.9 during the noon hour to broadcast her sentiments and propaganda for a few weeks and on election day purchased a day long slot on the same radio station which boardcasts as far as Victoria but to no avail.
   Ms. Luna-Saldana expressed her disdain for Congression candidate Ms. Mesa-Harrisan with the venom that can only stem from the deepest part of one's dark chest.  She said on the air:  "You (Rose Mesa-Harrison) better believe it is personal, very personal."  This statement cast a cloud of political "bad breath": hued with all the calculated poison of vengeance.
  Why "vengeance"?   To explain, before  enrolling as a candidate for Congress, Ms. Mesa-Harrison, had served a fair tenure as Democratic Chair of Nueces County.  During her term she queried the STATE PARTY in reference to policy -- specifically precinct chairs (e.g., Susie Luna-Saldana and Roland Garza) who had taken "Republican consultation" dollars and were determined to continue serving as precinct chairs. The STATE PARTY rendered an opinion --i.e.,  it was not allowed.  Therefore and henceforth, she formally drafted a letter asking for the resignation of both Susie Luna-Saldana and Roland Garza as precinct chairs.  Despite the protestations and remonstrations of the two parties in question, they were eventually scratched off their official duties and authority.
  Ms. Luna-Saldana, who had a long track record as being affiliated with the Democratic Party in the region, felt humiliated.  Thus the radio time she bought (or was bought) to promote Trevino's candidacy was utilized informally personally hammer Ms. Mesa-Harrison or at least it was the way it was construed by many a keen observer.
  After receiving news that Ms. Mesa Harrison had been victorious, Ms. Luna-Saldana said told Radio Host Vicente Carranza:  "It is not over.  This just gives me another 100 days to begin a campaign against esa mujer (that woman) Rose Mesa-Harrison who I believe should never serve in that office."
  Ms. Luna-Saldana, soon after that statement, added: "I will be helping her Republican Opponent Blake Farenthold".
  One political analyist concluded: "There is a trend. It appears Hispanic Democrats are retrenching and stratifying themselves in reference to affiliations of the Susie-Luna-Salanda's of this world.  They are a harming agent, not a healthy benefial one for candidates that want to win."
   District Attorney Mark Skurka , who in the last election faced the fury of Ms. Luna-Saldana's rethorical hash said: "I took a beating. My family took a beating.  It is a dirty, vicious, wicked mockery of the political process."

Key Leaders In Nueces County's Lunatic Republican fringes -- TEA PARTYERS & JOHN BIRCHERS Have Befriended CHUCK BALWIN -- a dangerious racist and anti-goverment activist.

After a Republican take over of most key seats in the last few elections, the luntic fringe that once was small within the Nueces County Democratic Party keys snow-balling. A former Republican Chair of the county, who resigned after a short tenure, and his wife had befriended Chuck Balwin in Facebook.  Others joined, after Rev. Balwin was given legitimacy, and a local member of the Tea Party also named "Chuck" became a local representative of the John Bircher Society and the Barwin brand of Patriotism in the region.  Anti-government movie pow-wows were promoted by the latter in Corpus Christi and Nueces County.  Pretty soon many here locally lodged in the lunatic core of the Tea Party and the Patriot Movement within the Republican Party began to be his prime converts.

BUT, before we proceed, let us ask: WHO IS REV. CHUCK BALWIN? 

Surely Not A Friend Of Hispanics!!!

After decades of trying to insert his distinctive brand of Christian fundamentalism into mainstream politics, Chuck Baldwin-- in his fifties, living in Montana -- appears to have given up trying to infiltrate Capitol Hill and moved instead into the" wilds".  Two years ago, a decade after declaring the Bush-Cheney GOP ticket too liberal and law with immigrants especially Hispanics, Baldwin and a dozen or so members of his lunatic fringe moved to Montana’s Flathead Valley, an area that has seen an explosive increase in antigovernment “Patriot” rhetoric. He left behind a church he had been associated with for 30-plus years to  radicalize his new endeavor, one he described meticulously to those he left behind.“We are going [to Montana] to fight!” 

Baldwin wrote in a Sept. 15, 2010, letter announcing his move to the congregants of his Pensacola, Fla., church. “The Mountain States just might become The Alamo of the twenty-first century, with, hopefully much better results. But if not, I would rather die fighting for Freedom with liberty-loving patriots by my side than be shuttled off to some FEMA camp.” Baldwin was referring to a core Patriot belief that the federal government has secretly constructed concentration camps meant for Americans.

Besides leading a new congregation in Kalispell that includes well-known white supremacists Randy Weaver and April Gaede, Baldwin hosts a daily one-hour radio program, “Chuck Baldwin Live.” He also is a prolific writer, penning regular columns that are archived on his website and at VDARE.com, a racist website known for bashing immigrants. He has condemned Islam as a “bloody, murderous religion” and referred to Martin Luther King Jr. as an apostate. He sympathizes with Joseph Stack, the tax protester who flew a plane into an IRS office building in 2010, killing himself and an IRS employee. The South, he insists, “was right.” 

 He refers to Tejano Music as "Taco Music" and says that most of the South Texas Hispanics are nothing more than overgrown "anchor" babies.  But such local sentiments were not new in Corpus Christi, Talk Radio personality Eric Von Wade when he was associated with KEYS RADIO stated on the air that immigrants coming in from Mexico should be "stamped with a number on their feet, like the ducks at a carnival."

Politics may come and go for Baldwin. But out in Montana, as it is here in NUECES COUNTY far away from the “Orwellian machine” of the federal government, the indignation and xenophobia  and paranoia — just keep on snowballing.

PHIL VEL TAKES LEAD IN CONGRESSIONAL RACE

South Texas -- Candidate Phil Vela appears to be the front-runner in a congressional race now that District Attorney Armando Villalobos  (from the Valley) has been indicted on Federal Racketeering Charges.

A few days before early voting, a few days before candidates start pushing their campaign full throttle, candidate Villalobos in indicted and starkly dragged through the mud of repercussions. 

Villalobos' resultant campaign: frozen, insecure, devastated, sting-ed with shifting loyalties. How many are the feelings being expressed -- summed up in one word, perhaps "panic."  The polls, the odds machines quickly stamping outputs of "invalidity" -- in short, a floodgate of a "free for all" has been unleashed.

But the pragmatist analysts know and some have uttered: "Phil Vela is clearly in the lead. And clearly new appointments have taken priority: haircut, tailor, Juan "Shoe-Shine" Perez, a pow-wow with the core group and "think tank" to maximized the climate of the media."

One analyist stated: "Phil is probably staging a pilot run before the mirror for the grand debut: "Veterans, senors, those caught in the grindstone of poverty and struggle, don't lose hope, esperanza, I have picked up the flag of my Father and Mother before me in the political area as a public official -- WE WILL PEVAIL."

El Defenzor- As a proud grandfather of a brilliant young boy I became deeply concerned about birth defects in children and the link between anti-depressants. I caught up with Joe Flores an attorney and nurse practitioner (FNP) when we began our probe of pharmaceutical companies who may have caused birth defects, and because of increasing reports of mothers who had been given antidepressants as a big selling point by pharmaceutical companies.
Joe Flores, nurse practitioner and attorney, recently was interviewed at his offices in downtown Corpus Christi and said this: "Most of us go through life not knowing the challenges that other families face. For instance, someone having a son or daughter with several birth defects is mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausting. Society has judged families because of their child’s disabilities instead of sympathizing with the challenges that the family faces daily. El Defenzor- Homer Villarreal: Joe, what do we know about the link between birth defects and anti-depressants?

JOE FLORES, ATTORNEY AND FNP: Since September 2005, information has been emerging that certain antidepressants may cause birth defects, including cardiac (heart), pulmonary (lung), neural-tube defects (brain and spinal cord), craniosynostosis (skull defect), infant omphalocele (abdominal wall defects), club foot (one or both feet turn downward and inward), and anal atresia (complete or partial closure of the anus), among others. I am currently investigating whether or not the following antidepressants also cause such birth defects:
• Celexa manufactured by Forest Labs (generic form is citalopram)
• Effexor manufactured by Wyeth (generic form is venlafaxine)
• Lexapro manufactured by Forest Labs (generic form is escitalopram)
• Pristiq manufactured by Wyeth (generic form is desvenlafaxine)
• Prozac manufactured by Eli Lilly (generic form is fluoxetine)
• Zoloft manufactured by Pfizer (generic form is sertraline hydrochloride)
El Defenzor- Homer Villarreal: What should moms who have given birth over the last 10 years and who took anti-depressants be aware of?

The extensive information I have reviewed reveals that mothers who have taken antidepressants during their pregnancy because they thought it was safe have given birth to babies with birth defects ranging from cleft lip to life-threatening congenital heart defects and, in some cases, the babies have been required to get full heart transplants.
Many legal and medical experts are establishing the link between antidepressants and the following congenital defects:
• Abdominal Birth Defects / Omphalocele
• Autism Spectrum Disorders
• Anal atresia (complete or partial closure of the anus)
• Cardiac (heart) defects
• Cleft lip and cleft palate
• Clubfoot (one or both feet turn downward and inward)
• Craniosynostosis (skull defect)
• Limb Defects
• Neural-tube defects (brain and spinal cord, spina bifida)
• PPHN (Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn)

El Defenzor- Homer Villarreal: Joe, what does the government say about all this?
Joe Flores, Attorney and FNP: Well, on heart and birth defects, the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory on December 8, 2005 based on U.S. and Swedish studies showing that exposure to certain antidepressants in the first trimester of pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of heart birth defects. Most of the cardiac defects observed in these studies were atrial or ventricular septal defects, those are the top and bottom chambers of the heart, conditions in which the wall between the right and left sides of the heart is not completely developed and that can cause devastating disease and shorten a lifespan even with surgery.
El Defenzor- Homer Villarreal: What is PPHN?
Joe Flores Attorney and FNP: PPHN stands for Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) and is a serious and life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon after birth of the newborn. Babies with PPHN have high pressure in their lung blood vessels and are not able to get enough oxygen into their bloodstream. About 1 to 2 babies per 1000 babies born in the U.S. develop PPHN shortly after birth, and often they need intensive medical care.
El Defenzor- Homer Villarreal: How did you begin hearing about birth defects in pregnant women who took anti-depressants.
Joe Flores-Attorney and FNP: As a nurse practitioner who can prescribe drugs in association with physicians, I receive notices early on, but I also heard anecdotally through my colleagues who treat pregnant women that an alarming number were having babies with birth defects that had been on anti-depressants. Even before studies came out we knew something was wrong. One of these notices that begin my research in earnest was on July 19, 2006. On that date the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory for SSRIs, including Celexa (citalopram), Fluvoxamine, Lexapro (escitalopram), Prozac (fluoxetine), Symbyax (olanzapine and fluoxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline) based on a study that suggests there may be additional risks of SSRI medications during pregnancy. I receive this notice in the mail as I and all prescribers of medicine do throughout the country. I immediately let patients and clients and other healthcare providers know about this study. This was very alarming to me. Often, if you are not a lawyer you don’t hear about this soon enough and the same is true if you are a healthcare provider who is not in tune with the legal system. I am in both professions and put the two together quickly and began my mission to educate mothers and the public about this but so many suffered because of the failure to disclose this to the public by pharmaceutical companies who don’t want you to hear the truth. As healthcare prescriber I always underline that doctors and nurse practitioners prescribe drugs to their patients with trust that the FDA and the pharmaceutical companies will give us the appropriate warnings. They didn’t do this for our pregnant patients before the mid 2000’s and many women received an anti-depressant with sad results in the form of their babies having birth defects that were in my opinion, unjustified and needless.

Joe Flores-Nurse Practitioner- Attorney: People need to hear more about this. Expectant mothers on government aid as well as more affluent mothers were given anti-depressants that could injure or hurt their child and in many cases it happened.

Joe Flores: Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Attorney: I believe that the pharmaceutical companies need to be held accountable.
